Never ending expansion

I have been looking at the Waste Management “high acres” landfill just outside of Rochester NY as a parallel to the Carp Road. It was opened in 1971 similar to the Rump Dump. It was taken over by WM similar to the Carp dump. It has had 4 expansions and WM is looking for a fifth. Carp has had 2 and is looking for a third. It is 5 times the area and will be over 4 times as high as the Carp site (imagine). The latest expansion proposal has passed all government approvals but as of April 2 2010 there is a law suite against the expansion. The site has a designed capacity of 3,500 tons /day (over double what is proposed for Carp) for the next 40 years. This just proves that once WM has a property they will never give up the idea of expansion for more landfill. We must find alternatives to landfill or 40 years from now we will be fighting an other new expansion proposal from Waste Management.
