Corporate greed

The environment and peoples livelihoods can not be sacrificed for corporate greed.

Janet Bagnall writes in the June 1 2010 Ottawa Citizen Op-Ed Let's sue the pants off BP

“…The company's guiding principle appears to have been money first. The New York Times has reported that, according to a BP document, BP chose to use a riskier type of casing for the well because it made the "best economic case"….”

Waste Management has stated in their application for a new landfill in the west end of Ottawa.

“… we made our business decisions not to look at another site due to reason of investment in current site's infrastructure and operations, no other land owned/optioned elsewhere in Ottawa area and no ability to expropriate lands”…. This can be interpreted as … our business decissions not to look for the best site…

In both cases corporate decisions are based on “the best economic case” not the best environmental and social case. We must demand that big corporations respect their social responsibilities and the environmental integrity when they make corporate decisions.
